Breaking Stairs

Perhaps the best part of Sosaria is having a HOME. A real home, that you can decorate and hoard your stuff in. You can dictate a seasonal flair, or simply hide everything away in chests. Create a museum, hotel, tavern, or a shop. And the best aspect of having a home in Sosaria, is customizing it!

Sosaria offers static houses which can now be customized with crafted blocks of stone. Come and visit my castles sometime for some ideas. However, the real clincher for customizing a home comes from placing just that, a Custom Home. As long as there is space for it, a plot can be purchased up to 18x18 tiles (the unit of distance measurement). Then, enter into the customizing mode, and build your home.

This is when it gets interesting. I won't present a tutorial on building, but using straight stairs between floor gets boring pretty quick. Someone figured out a way to "break" stairs, and the fun began! Creating landings, spiral stair, and other configurations all comes from a process during the building of the house.

Disclaimer

Player be warned: "breaking" stairs is not really a supported function of the game. It is a process discovered by players when Custom Homes came into being. A Game Master may or may not help a player having issues with home design where "broken" stairs are used. There have been no adverse account actions from the developers regarding this practice, so a player may assume it is alright to do. However, at any time, the developers may "fix" the "problem" and those broken stairs could one day disappear. I'm sure the developers will communicate with the players about this before it happens, but you never know.

With that said, having a functioning design with broken stairs is not easy to explain with text. After much research, I made tutorial videos for each client of UO.

Enhanced Client

Below is a video showing the process for the Enhanced Client.

Classic Client

Here is the video showing the process using the Classic Client.

The Ultimate Uniqueness of UO

UO is the only game in existence with multiple (official) clients. The original "Classic Client" (CC) displays the game differently than the modern "Enhanced Client" (EC) with different artwork and user interface. Core functions like macros are also done differently, and a whole lot of other things separate the two clients. The community as a whole cannot agree which is preferred, and conversations get heated on the topic. Myself, I prefer the CC for normal gameplay as it uses less resources on my current computer. However, the EC is very pretty, and most features for the game are built by the developers for the EC first.
